                            Cadillac LaSalle Club of Canada

                         OCTOBER 2006

It is hard to take but this is being written while enjoying the sights and sounds and a posh condo at Whistler. No snow at the village as yet but when the rain lets up it may show on the mountains. We wanted to see Whistler prior to the 2010 revision. It has begun but will surely take the next three years to complete, as will the Sea to Sky Hi-way. It is a mammoth project with many mountains to move into valleys. I wish Vanoc and all those responsible, all the very best of luck on the timing. I also wish all the taxpayers of B.C. all the best in paying for this "world class event".

Whistler is a beautiful area even though the only Cadillacs you see are new ones, mainly Escalades. This may be due to the very expensive and very limited parking. It is a place for young and fit people that like to walk and exercise. In comparison to the rest of the population we just don’t make it.

Events

The next event for the CLCC will be our Christmas Brunch on Sunday Dec.3Rd. It will be held at the Crossroads Bar & Grill at 11:30 A.M. It is located at the corner of Goldstream and Sooke Rd. Roger and Val Barrie would like to know the numbers for attendance by Nov. 27Th. They can be contacted at 1-250-474-4355 or by e-mail at ourbarriepatch@shaw.ca   Put a mark on your calendar then contact them and then enjoy a great brunch on Dec. 3Rd.

January Meeting.

This will occur in early Jan. when we will have a collector and authority on Automotive Mascots and hood ornaments, Dr. James Colwill, give us a talk and display. He has spoken to different clubs around town and his next book will be out by then.

This month’s Cadillac of the Month will show a piece of LaSalle that has almost been lost to history. It is a photo of the ’28 Mascot that once adorned someone’s pride and joy. It is but a small part of the Cadillac related mascots from Dr. Colwill’s collection.

We will also be selecting officers for the positions of Vice Pres., Treasurer, as I will be away from mid Jan. until around the first week in March. After consultation with some members, we felt that this was the way to do it. Our AGM will be held in early March with time and place for these two meetings to be posted soon.

                   LaSalle-A History in Advertising

                                               A Review- Lorne Scott

I arrived home after a brief vacation to find this (unsolicited) CD in my mailbox. It would appear that I received it due to my involvement with the LaSalle Automobile. Whatever the reason, I am glad they chose me.

The following is a review of the CD "LaSalle- A History in Advertising" produced by Archives of Advertising, 56 Arbor Street, Hartford CT. 06106 U.S.A.

Their Phone # is (860)-523-1622 and Web Site- www.archivesofadvertising.com .

Technical Aspects –

The CD loads quickly and efficiently and brings up a simple but impressive Home Page. Clicking on the appropriate spot takes you to a very responsive menu page containing the following options:

CADILLAC JUNIOR- A brief but concise history of the LaSalle Automobile.

SLIDE SHOW – An overview of all the advertisements on the disk.

BROWSE:

BY YEAR- Displays a Thumbnail page of a good number of the adverts from your chosen year.

BY BODY STYLE – Just pick one of the body styles from the drop down menu and up comes a page of thumbnails of that body style through the years.

BY SPONSOR – This lists Fisher, GM and New departures. (New developments over the years)

CHECKLIST – A well documented listing of all the ads on the disk.

HELP – A well-organized and informative section as to the operation of the disk.

ABOUT THE SERIES – Basically, the Mission Statement of "Archives of Advertising" as well as some current and future projects.

ABOUT THE PUBLISHER – A further catalogue of items already produced and as well how and where to obtain them.

This Collection illustrates through advertising and artwork, LaSalles evolution from the early classics to the sleek sculptured lines of the final years.

The reproduction of the magazine pages are detailed and exquisite even when printed out on a home printer. My favorite is the 1927-1929 era with the classic art-deco work of Edward Wilson and John Gannom.

You can find the LaSalle CD on their web site at www.archivesofadvertising.com or click on http://www.archivesofadvertising.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=134&category_id=1c914424d2569bea3439fbcca9123a27&ps_session=397ce8d8d761f599b349c4f6fd2a1598 for direct access.

This, as well as most other products are advertised at around the $20.00 US. This disk is well worthwhile at that price and would be a good reference CD for any LaSalle owner. The CD – Cadillac - 1948-1959: Lord of the Fins – should be another winner in the near future.

Possible alterations:

SLIDE SHOW- may be helpful if it were to be co-ordinated with the BY YEAR, rather than by all adverts.  It would also be helpful ir it were timed and these options added to the help menu.

FLEETWOOD – Could be added to the sponsors list to produce a thumbnail page of Fleetwood models as is the Fisher.

It is not clear as yet whether these additions will be implemented but as it stands, it is a very pleasant experience to an old LaSalle Buff.

Gee our Old LaSalles Run Great!!

Lorne

Grease from the Squeaky Wheel

This is a reminder that your special interest vehicle is in need of winterizing. 1A Auto has put out a good resume of things to be done and that is at the click of a mouse at www.1aauto.com . Choose 1A Garage from the menu at the bottom of the Home Page. You will find a brief resume of basic items to be done before those winter nasties start happening.

Food for thought for today!

The Way I See It

I’ve learned in climbing that you don’t "conquer" anything. Mountains are not conquered and should be treated with respect and humility. If we take what mountains give, have patience and desire, and are prepared, then mountains will permit us to reach their highest peaks. I believe a lot of things are like that in life.

Ed Viesturs

Information??

As you can see, there have been no requests for computer assistance so I guess we are alright in that department. The offer still remains if you need basic help. The above Food for thought was found recently and there may be many more to come if all goes well.

Cadillac of the Month

This month, following the LaSalle moteif, we will have a look at the last picture of Jim Morley’s ’31 coupe. It is now all disassembled, Catalogued and put away awaiting the accumulation of needed parts and the time to start the restoration process.

All the best Jim and we hope to see yours out in a while.

Happy Birthday John!!!

John Benson celebrated his 39Th. Birthday once again recently. Congratulations John and keep up the good work!!!

LaSalle Mascot

The mascot pictured below is from Dr Colwill’s collection. These could be purchased as separate items from the factory at what was thought to be great expense at the time. The one pictured in last month’s Chronicle apparently was an after market replica or a toy that someone started to construct for this purpose.

Well, that looks to be about it for this month but don’t forget about the Dec. 3Rd. CLCC Brunch. You may also wish to bring a prospective new member. We are hoping to have a few more outings and interesting places to go in the near future. If any of you have a place you would like to show the rest of us, please feel free to tell Roger about it so he can set it up. If you wish, you set it up and invite the rest of us to come along! Today is another bonus day so the fall gardening gets my attention. Must go, there is much to do in life. All the best,

Lorne Scott
